TV Guide is currently taking votes for their annual fan favorite awards. There are 13 categories total, but only the first six are available for voting so far. There will be seven more categories opened up for voting over the next few days and I’ll write the second part to this on March 3.
Here’s a list of the nominees, how I voted and why. You can vote here (via Facebook) to make your voice heard.
Over the course of December, I’ll present a series of my own end of 2012 lists. Unlike many, I won’t give you a best of list because that’s no fun. Instead I’ll give you lists of my favorite things from 2012. Because let’s face it: the best stuff isn’t always what you love the most.

I already wrote about my initial reactions to the 64th Emmy Nominations, but I’ve had time to think about it and am officially making my predictions for this Sunday’s award show. I’ll keep it short and sweet and to the point. I’ll only discuss the major acting award in drama/comedy. No writing, directing or guest appearances. No miniseries or TV movies either. Just the big guns.
Why is Homeland so good? It won instantaneous critical acclaim upon its release and grabbed the Golden Globe for Best Drama Series and Best Drama Actress (Claire Danes) and a nomination for Best Drama Actor (Damien Lewis). Now it’s up for nine awards at next week’s Emmy Award and will most likely net Danes her second major award for the series and is a serious contender to end Mad Men’s four year streak.
Narrowing this list down to five shows returning this fall was the most difficult thing in the world. So I didn’t. Instead I made it 10; which was still a difficult number. People might question why I left off perennial favorites, like shows about zombies and Prohibition era gangsters, but I’ve always had a quirky loyalty to certain shows and have followed a few of these from the beginning. Here we go:
I’ve seen a lot of pilots already, but haven’t seen past the first episode and am eagerly awaiting the premieres of a lot of new shows. Of course there are a lot more than this that I’m going to be tuning in for, but these are the five that stuck out the most.
I love, love, love the Emmys. It’s my favorite night of the year. I woke up too late to live tweet or anything crazy like that so I watched a repeat of the nomination here. I watched each category be announced, paused it and wrote about it. The order you see below is the order Kerry Washington and Jimmy Kimmel announced them in.
Supporting roles were not announced during the webcast and can be found listed here. I included my thoughts on these categories after the Outstanding Comedy Series award. I chose not to touch on all of the awards (writing, directing, etc) but will eventually make my final picks in every category in the week prior to the ceremony. Enjoy.
Oral histories aren’t something I necessarily go looking for when I want a definitive account of a piece of history. While I originally expected former NBC President Warren Littlefield’s Top of the Rock: Inside the Rise and Fall of Must See TV to be a straightforward narrative with some personal splash, I quickly realized this was indeed an oral recollection from several key players of the most influential period of recent television.
The similarities between Arrested Development and Community are uncanny. Both received critical acclaim and a devout cult following, but failed to please their respected networks with the viewers needed to keep the show alive. Arrested Development only lasted three seasons, each shorter than the previous, while Community has been renewed for a 13-episode fourth season to air next fall.
Both are full of witty and off-beat characters in plots that are just as absurd. A common thread between the two is how tightly woven the universe was and if you didn’t watch from the beginning, you probably would never catch on and therefore not ever pick the show up and put it in your regular rotation.
One of the biggest similarities is in fact those zany and loveable characters and I’ve decided to take a look at how similar the cast of characters truly is by matching them up. Now they don’t line up perfectly, but I took a key characteristic to make the matches.
